SpaceX alumni behind 1872 are using one of Ohio’s largest seed rounds to build an AI-native factory model for energy, utility and industrial customers, aiming to cut steel fabrication lead times from months to weeks with software, robotics and physical AI.

A Cincinnati startup founded by former SpaceX engineers is bringing AI-driven automation to heavy steel fabrication, backed by one of the largest seed rounds in Ohio history.

1872 announced Wednesday it has opened an automated steel fabrication facility in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood and secured $15 million in seed funding led by private funds advised from The O.H.I.O. Fund. The round marks a significant deployment for The O.H.I.O. Fund, which reported raising $647 million and deploying $219 million across 33 investments as of March 31, 2026.

The company is developing an AI-native factory model designed to automate heavy steel fabrication, an industry still reliant on manual labor and fragmented workflows and increasingly strained by demand from modular construction and infrastructure markets.

Why it matters

U.S. demand for fabricated metal products reaches roughly $350 billion annually, yet the industry faces a structural labor shortage. The American Welding Society projects a deficit of 320,000 welders by 2030. By automating heavy fabrication tasks, 1872 aims to cut customer lead times from months—or longer—to weeks.

The facility

The company is operating out of the historic 1903 David Hummel Building Company facility on Spring Grove Avenue—a site originally built by a stone masonry firm that constructed Cincinnati’s City Hall and Union Terminal. Early automation is already in place, with full factory autonomy targeted for 2027.

Ohio's growing momentum

The launch signals growing momentum around physical AI and industrial automation across Ohio’s manufacturing corridor. 1872 cited the state’s industrial base and engineering talent pipeline from institutions including the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, Purdue University, and Carnegie Mellon University as key factors in its location decision.

“Our goal is to create a new model and foundation for American manufacturing, with software orchestrating robotics and production to deliver a faster, more efficient, and safer fabrication process,” said Dan Summers, co-founder and CEO of 1872.

What’s next

1872 will use the Camp Washington facility as a prototype to validate end-to-end automated production before scaling its software platform and factory model into additional heavy manufacturing sectors.
