Technology upgrades save Ohioans 10 million trips to BMV
Ohio’s ongoing digital transformation of government services has reached a major milestone: technology upgrades at the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) have saved Ohioans more than 10 million in-person trips since 2019.
Why it matters
The enhancements are part of the DeWine Administration’s efforts to improve customer experience and reduce congestion at BMV offices across the state. With expanded online and self-service options, Ohio residents now have faster, more convenient access to critical services, cutting down on wait times and travel.
The details
Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jim Tressel, and BMV Registrar Charlie Norman highlighted several key features driving the milestone:
Online renewals: More than 608,000 Ohioans have renewed driver’s licenses and ID cards online since 2022, a service recently expanded to eligible commercial driver’s license holders.
BMV Express kiosks: Located at grocery stores and e-check stations, these kiosks have saved more than 670,000 trips by enabling instant printing of vehicle registration cards and plate stickers.
Online knowledge testing: New drivers have saved 200,000 trips by taking driving knowledge tests online.
Ohio Title Portal: Allows person-to-person vehicle title transfers online, with requests routed to county offices for approval.
Get In Line, Online: Since 2019, this virtual queuing system has saved Ohioans over 812,000 hours of in-office wait time.
What’s next
Ohio BMV leaders say they will continue exploring new innovations to further modernize services and meet the needs of residents statewide. In-person services remain available, but the state is focused on making digital options as accessible and efficient as possible.
