Biopharmaceutical giant Amgen has announced a $900 million expansion of its Central Ohio manufacturing facility, bringing its total investment in the region to over $1.4 billion and boosting job creation to 750 positions. This marks one of the largest life sciences manufacturing expansions in Ohio’s history.

Founded over 40 years ago, Amgen is one of the world’s leading BioTech companies, delivering breakthrough medicines for cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, and rare diseases. The company was recently recognized by Fast Company as one of the "World’s Most Innovative Companies" and by Forbes as one of "America’s Best Large Employers."

By the numbers

  • $1.4 billion+ total investment in Ohio ($900 million new)

  • 750 total jobs created (an increase of 350 jobs with the new expansion)

  • Part of $5 billion Amgen has invested in U.S. capital expenditures since 2017

Why it matters

Amgen’s growing footprint strengthens Ohio’s status as a national hub for advanced manufacturing and biotechnology innovation. The expansion builds on the company's initial entry into Ohio in 2021, when it opened its state-of-the-art biomanufacturing facility in the Columbus Region.

What they’re saying

"Ohio has built a strong foundation for economic development, which has led companies like Amgen to see Ohio as a premier destination for growth," said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.

"Ohio offers a supportive business climate, skilled workforce, and strategic location, making it an ideal choice for this next phase of our investment,” added Robert A. Bradway, chairman and chief executive officer at Amgen.

“This transformational investment by Amgen further proves that Ohio is where biotech can grow and thrive,” said Eddie Pauline, President & CEO of Ohio Life Sciences. “The good-paying jobs that this facility is creating will transform families and bring life-saving medicine to patients around the world. This is also an important signal to political leaders that we must invest in our life sciences talent pipeline to sustain this type of growth and attract even more.”

Construction on the Ohio expansion is underway, further boosting Central Ohio’s growing reputation as a center for life sciences, healthcare innovation, and biomanufacturing.
