Marietta College has opened the Center for Appalachian Innovation, launching a new regional hub focused on strengthening economic growth, research, and community collaboration across Appalachian Ohio. The announcement was made during a November 10th event at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center attended by leaders from government, business, and higher education.

Why it matters

The Center is designed to address persistent economic and structural challenges across Appalachian Ohio while positioning the region for new opportunities in workforce development, local government modernization, and small-business growth. By pairing academic research with community and industry needs, the Center aims to accelerate practical, scalable solutions.

What’s happening

The Center is funded through the State of Ohio’s Priority Projects Line Item, with $750,000 annually for the next two years.

Its work is organized around three pillars:

  • Research: Faculty and students will partner with local governments and industry to investigate systemic regional challenges and surface data-driven solutions.

  • Convene: The Center will host symposia and working sessions to bring together leaders from business, government, and community organizations.

  • Support: It will provide capacity-building resources for local governments and small businesses, including help with planning, grant navigation, and operational improvement.

What they’re saying

“Appalachian Ohio has a rich history and tremendous potential,” said Dr. Kathleen Dougherty, President of Marietta College. “This Center is about embracing who we are as a region and working together to help Appalachian communities thrive. By uniting Marietta College’s academic strengths with regional leadership and innovation-oriented stakeholders, we aim to serve as a catalyst for economic and community revitalization in Marietta and Appalachian Ohio.”

The big picture

The creation of the Center marks a deepened commitment by Marietta College to support the economic, educational, and civic growth of Appalachian communities. By convening stakeholders and backing research tied directly to local challenges, the initiative seeks to transform regional ideas into long-term action.
