Google to help 25,000 veterans and military families build skilled trades careers
The company will fund three veteran organizations to provide pre-apprenticeships, career coaching and job placements for veterans, service members and military spouses. The announcement was written by Google’s Ohio and Indiana data center operations lead, a 21-year Navy veteran.
Google is turning to veterans and military families to help address one of the physical constraints behind the AI infrastructure boom: a shortage of skilled trade workers needed to build, power, cool, and maintain data centers.
Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, announced a national initiative on Sept. 24 to help 25,000 veterans, transitioning service members, and military family members build careers in the skilled trades. The program will be delivered in partnership with Hiring Our Heroes, Student Veterans of America (SVA), and the Home Builders Institute (HBI).
Why it matters for Ohio
The national announcement was authored by Tim Chadwick, Google’s Data Center Operations Area Lead for Ohio and Indiana. As data center development expands across Ohio and the broader Midwest, the digital infrastructure sector relies on electricians, pipefitters, mechanical technicians, and project managers to construct and operate facilities.
Chadwick, a 21-year U.S. Navy veteran who served seven years as a nuclear-trained operator and 13 years as a submarine officer, framed the civilian transition around technical operational alignment:
“It turns out, a lot of the skills you pick up running a nuclear submarine (planning and leading a mission, working closely with technicians, exercising sound judgment) are the same kinds of skills that come in handy when your job is to oversee data center operations," Chadwick wrote.
How the program works
Google.org is providing funding and support to three national organizations that serve the military community:
- Hiring Our Heroes: Supports career transitions and employment pathways for veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses.
- Student Veterans of America: Continues work bringing Google Career Certificates and AI training to veterans nationwide.
- Home Builders Institute: Expands its tuition-free, 12-week Military Services program through the Department of Defense SkillBridge initiative, providing training in carpentry and electrical work.
Together, the three partners will offer hands-on pre-apprenticeships, career coaching, and direct job placements. HBI stated its program operates at 10 sites on or near military installations—including Camp Pendleton, Fort Liberty, and Fort Cavazos—where participants earn industry-recognized credentials and receive placement support.
The big picture
The announcement aligns with Google’s ongoing workforce and industrial training initiatives. Earlier this year, Google joined BlackRock, Ford, and Carhartt to launch the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades. Google.org has also funded the electrical training ALLIANCE to deploy AI-assisted learning tools in trade education and backed SVA to expand access to foundational tech training.
The initiative connects to Google.org’s $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, launched in 2024 to help more than 1 million Americans build technology and workforce competencies.
