Ohio State launches AI-enabled biotech initiative to speed drug discovery
Backed by Ohio State’s medical, cancer and pharmacy assets, the new effort will pair AI with clinical and genomic data to speed the path from research to patents, startup formation and clinical trials—an added push for Central Ohio’s life-sciences sector.
The Ohio State University is launching Buckeye BioLaunch, an AI-enabled therapeutic discovery and development initiative that will combine clinical and genomic data with university research to advance potential medicines from early discovery toward commercialization.
The effort brings together Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, the Comprehensive Cancer Center–James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, and the colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. University leaders say the program is designed to build a pipeline of therapeutics advancing toward commercialization and to drive biotech growth, job creation and economic development in Central Ohio.

The initiative will be based in Ohio State’s Innovation District and will be led by Deanna L. Kroetz, dean of the College of Pharmacy, and Xiaolin Cheng, a professor of medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy.
What it will do
Buckeye BioLaunch will support projects across the drug-development process, from genomics and target identification through molecule discovery and development, and ultimately to medicine.
The university expects to support 10 to 20 AI-driven screening projects a year. Progress will be measured through composition-of-matter patents, technical development milestones, licenses, startup formation and clinical trials.
“Ohio State intends to be a national force in therapeutic innovation, where producing new medicines every five to 10 years becomes an expected outcome,” Kroetz said in a statement.
The AI angle
The effort will draw on clinical and genomic datasets from Ohio State Genomic Health, an investment by the Wexner Medical Center.
Ohio State says those data resources, combined with the College of Pharmacy’s drug-development expertise and the College of Medicine’s clinical and translational-research strengths, position the university to advance therapeutic development.
“The ‘why now’ is simple: AI is transforming drug discovery at a remarkable speed,” Kroetz said.

Buckeye BioLaunch complements other Ohio State investments, including faculty hiring in computational chemistry, genomics and health-data AI through its AI Faculty Hiring Initiative. It also connects with the university’s AI(X) Hub, a cross-disciplinary effort focused on artificial-intelligence research and innovation, including in health care.
The university will evaluate the initiative through commercial and research milestones, including patents, licenses, startup formation and clinical trials.
